Yay for biofuel. It’s really starting to gather momentum. There’s a cautionary wee catch, however, within this item you’ll see. Bio-fuel requires land, potentially lots of it. If this isn’t managed properly we could well be looking at increased deforestation, eco-system destruction and (further) reduction of the area available for subsistence food crops in
developing countries. Far from a panacea. Let’s hope that there is foresight in the way that the increased need for crops is met.
Nevertheless, there appears to be great potential in this technology. The 2nd generation fuels are set to bring improved yields and benefits.
The Moors, the Christians … and the Cameraman September 11, 2006

Yesterday saw yet another fiesta here in Mallorca, in Santa Ponsa. This time it was to mark the day when the Christian Crusaders came swashbuckling up to these fair shores and dished out some swift crusading-style justice to the Moors. The Moors, who had been living on the island for hundreds of years, were by all accounts an incredibly advanced people in many fields. The festival involved a mass reinactment of the day with huge numbers of townsfolk dressing up in costumes from either side and the Cristianos arriving in a flotilla of boats. The highlights of the festival thereafter were mock battles held on the beaches between huge costumed mobs. A festive affair it was. I’m not sure who enjoyed the dressing up more, the children or the adults. One thing I am sure of however, is that when you are a little kid in the midst of a mass playfight you are more than a little upset when a cameracrew trying to get “the story” repetitively pushes, jostles and plain just steps on you. Come to think of it I’ve seen this “the camera is God” kinda attitude many times before. Sure, I understand that bringing pictures of events like this to the wider public is important, but hey not to the detriment of the people who are actually there right? Keep that kinda thing up guys and you might just have all the time in the world to get that perfect angle … of your backyard … because there might not be any other events left to shoot.
